Description

Ex. John Young

Apollo 16 Flown Larger-Size Florida Flag Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. An 11.75" x 7.75" cloth flag of the state of Florida that flew aboard Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972, on the fifth manned mission to land on the moon. Florida, of course, is the home to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. The flag features a white field with a red "X" and the state seal centered. Flown Florida flags are not common. Several storage folds. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the large size (approximate 8" x 12") flag of the STATE OF FLORIDA that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label attached, #1733201, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
