Description
Ex. Gene Cernan
Apollo 17 Flown MS68 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 159, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan, Initialed as Flown on Original Case and with Signed Letter of Certification. This 35mm sterling silver medal was one of approximately eighty flown aboard Apollo 17, December 7-19, 1972, with crewmembers Gene Cernan, Ron Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. A total of 300 were minted to commemorate this sixth and final lunar landing of the NASA program. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the head of the Greek god Apollo, a U.S. flag and eagle, the moon, and the surnames of crewmembers. The mission dates are engraved on the reverse with the phrase "The Beginning". The serial number and sterling and Robbins hallmarks are on the rim. This is the rarest of all Apollo silver Robbins medals. Being from the flight commander's collection makes it even more desirable. The original numbered plastic case is included where Cernan has written "Flown EAC". A rare opportunity to own a very special medallion flown on man's last moon landing to date. A Superb Gem Uncirculated example.Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Gene Cernan; it reads, in full: "This is to certify the Robbins Medallion #159 flew with me aboard spacecraft 'America' to the moon on my Apollo XVII mission December 7-19, 1972. As one of my personal items that accompanied me to the moon, I presented this medallion to Claire Johnson as a personal keepsake, and it has been in her possession since that time. The medallion is a sterling silver circular medal with the Apollo XVII mission insignia on one side, the engraved mission dates on the other, and the certified number on the edge. This medallion was from my personal collection of space artifacts."
