Description
Apollo 11 Grumman "Apollo Operations Handbook - Lunar Module 5, Volume 1 Subsystems Data" Book. A massive (hundreds of pages) 2.25" thick manual, 8" x 10.5", five-hole punched and contained in a vintage binder. It is dated "1 August 1968" on the title page with a part number of "LMA790-3-LM5"; "Received/ Sep 10 1968/ J. L. Nevins" is rubberstamped at right (see note below). The fifth lunar module built by Grumman was the third to fly manned. This is the Subsystems Data manual for the vehicle that became known worldwide as Eagle, the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. There are literally hundreds of illustrations and tables contained herein, including dozens of foldout schematics and diagrams. There is an alphabetical index and list of abbreviations in the back. For those with a technical interest in this historical mission, don't miss an opportunity to own an amazing source of original information. Wear and light soiling from use, very good. From the Introduction: "LM 5 is designed for a manned lunar-orbital mission. It consists of an ascent stage and a descent stage; the stages are joined together at four interstage fittings by explosive nuts and bolts. Subsystem continuity between the stages is accomplished by separable interstage umbilicals and hardline connections. Both stages function as a single unit during lunar orbit, until separation is required. Stage separation is accomplished by explosively severing the four interstage nuts and bolts, the interstage umbilicals, and the water lines. All other hardlines are disconnected automatically at stage separation. The ascent stage can function as a single unit to accomplish rendezvous and docking with the CSM."
Note: J. L. Nevins was associated with the Instrumentation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was heavily involved with developing the Apollo Guidance and Navigation (G&N) System from the early date of 1964 and was a member of the "F Rendezvous Navigation Mission Techniques Panel" working on this particular Apollo 11 mission.
