Description
Apollo 13 Flown: Rare Larger Section of Command Module Flown Kapton Foil, with Goldberg Provenance and a Letter of Authenticity from Apollospace. A substantial remnant, 4.25" x 2.25" overall, of gold-colored Kapton foil flown aboard the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, originally part of the protective insulation on the Command Module Odyssey. This artifact was carried into lunar orbit and returned safely to Earth following the dramatic mid-mission accident that aborted the intended Moon landing. This piece is identified as Remnant B, one of three large Kapton pieces (A-C) sourced from the personal collection of NASA Production Control Engineer William Whipkey. The remnants were initially sold by Goldberg Auctioneers (original LOA included) and later authenticated and certified by Apollospace, LLC. The present piece is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Apollospace (signed and sealed), which includes photographic references of the three large remnants, with Remnant B illustrated as the example included here. Often sold in tiny fragments, scarce in this size. Light wear from flying approximately 498,000 miles in space.Kapton foil, prized for its heat resistance and durability, was a critical material in insulating Apollo spacecraft. Flown examples from Apollo 13 are particularly sought after due to the mission's extraordinary place in history, the near-loss of the crew and their eventual safe return marking one of NASA's greatest achievements in crisis management.
