Description
Apollo 13 Flown National Aeronautics and Space Council Flag on Crew Signed Certificate, with James Lovell Signed Liftoff Photo. A historically significant and rare presentation featuring a National Aeronautics and Space Council emblem flag that was carried aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft during its perilous journey around the Moon in April 1970. It has been mounted to a 9.25" x 9" certificate stating: "This flag was carried around the Moon aboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft, April 11-17, 1970." Just below the crew has signed in black ink: "James Lovell", "Fred Haise", and "Jack Swigert". Above the presentation is an 8" x 10" vivid color photograph of the Saturn V launch of Apollo 13, signed by Commander James Lovell (some fading to signature.Apollo 13, launched April 11, 1970, was to be the third lunar landing mission. When an oxygen tank explosion crippled the Service Module en route to the Moon, astronauts Lovell, Haise, and Swigert were forced to use the Lunar Module "Aquarius" as a lifeboat to survive. After an improvised, heroic effort by both crew and ground teams, they successfully looped around the Moon and returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970. Despite not landing, Apollo 13 traveled farther from Earth than any human mission before or since, making flown artifacts from the mission deeply symbolic of courage, ingenuity, and teamwork under adversity. The National Aeronautics and Space Council (chaired by Vice President Spiro Agnew at the time) oversaw U.S. space policy coordination, and flags such as this were carried aboard Apollo missions for presentation to key NASA and government officials. A rarely offered flown artifact and the first of its kind that Heritage has offered. Framed to an overall 11.5" x 22". Very fine.
