Ex. James Lovell
This diagram is the visual map of the failure path that crippled Apollo 13
Apollo 13 Flown "Power Distribution Matrix, Miscellaneous Buses"
Mission Operations Flowchart Originally from the Personal
Collection of James Lovell, Signed by both Lovell and Fred
Haise. Offered here is a flown artifact intimately tied to the
most dramatic moment of Apollo 13, physically representing the
power system that defined the mission's near-tragedy and ultimate
triumph. Flown aboard the mission and originating from Lovell's
personal collection, this chart provides a rare and tangible link
to the spacecraft's electrical failure that defined Apollo 13's
dramatic near-disaster and safe return.A 22.5" x 10.5" foldout chart printed on lightweight paper, tab reads "PWR DISTR MISC", NASA, Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas. Figure 3.3, Drawing No. 1081HRU111. Signed in black inks: "James Lovell/ CDR Apollo 13" at lower right and "Flown to the moon aboard Apollo 13/ Fred Haise LMP" at lower left. This intricate systems flowchart represents the electrical heart of the Apollo Command Module, the same network that failed catastrophically during the Apollo 13 mission following the explosion of an oxygen tank in the Service Module. The diagram maps the interconnections between the spacecraft's redundant electrical buses, battery and fuel cell inputs, and control relays, critical information that guided both the crew and Mission Control in diagnosing and managing spacecraft power during flight. Expected folds, extremely fine.
Commander Jim Lovell's calm report to Mission Control, "Houston, we've had a MAIN B BUS undervolt," marked the first moment the Apollo 13 crew recognized a major power anomaly. The subsystem referenced in that transmission is precisely the one depicted in this diagram. As such, the chart directly illustrates the system at the center of one of the most famous technical crises in human spaceflight.
