Description
Ex. Gene Cernan
Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown Back-Up Crew Mission Patch on
Presentation Certificate Signed by and Originally from the Personal
Collection of Mission Backup Commander Gene Cernan. A 4.25" x
3.875" oval patch (Back Up Crew Patch by AB Emblem) with an 8.5" x
11" printed certificate on Cernan's letterhead giving the entire
story of this humorous and unique "Apollo XIV Back Up Crew Patch".
It reads, in part: I served as the Commander of the Apollo XIV
backup crew, along with Joe Engle and Ron Evans. To show the prime
crew - Alan Shepard, Stu Roosa and Ed Mitchell - that we were
serious about taking their places on Apollo XIV if the need or
"opportunity" arose, we decided to have a backup crew mission patch
designed. This patch mimicked the Apollo XIV crew emblem and has
the distinction of being the only backup crew patch ever in the
Apollo program. Prior to the Apollo XIV lift off, Ron, Joe and I
worked with the ground crew to smuggle aboard and hide numerous of
these patches throughout the spacecraft, both in the Lunar Module
and in the Command Module. As a result, a few of these patches of
which this is one, flew to the lunar surface. The intent of our
patch was to depict Shepard, Mitchell and Roosa as the "old man,
the fat man, and the cute little red head" in that order. It should
be noted the similarity between the actual Apollo XIV crew patch
and our backup "Beep-Beep" patch." Only the second LM Flown example
Heritage has offered; the last one was in 2009. Excellent. As Gene Cernan wrote in his book, The Last Man on the Moon, "...All the way to the moon and back, even on the lunar surface, whenever the crew opened a box, bag, or locker, out would float a First Team mission patch... Perhaps the most repeated phrase on the private radio loop during the flight of Apollo 14 was Shepard's annoyance when still another patch would suddenly appear. 'Tell Cernan,' he growled, 'Beep-Beep, his ass'..." From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
