Description

Apollo 10 Flown American Flag and Mission Insignia Patch on Crew-Signed Certificate Presented to NASA's Director of Launch Operations Rocco Petrone, Directly from His Family's Collection. A 6" x 4.125" cloth U.S. flag along with a 4" x 4.25" embroidered mission insignia patch ('Post-flight Crew Patch) mounted on a 14" x 11" matboard that reads: "This Flag and Patch Carried to the Moon/ On Apollo X 18-26 May 1969/ To Rocco Petrone/ With Our Sincere Thanks". Signed beneath in black felt tip: "Tom Stafford", "John Young", and "Gene Cernan" (very slightly brushed). A particularly pleasing example with no fading to the signatures and almost no glue bleedthrough on the flag. Excellent.

Rocco Petrone's emphasis on rigorous testing and procedural adherence was vital for Apollo 10, which required precise maneuvers in lunar orbit, including testing the Lunar Module in the moon's gravitational field without actually landing. His management ensured that all components, from the spacecraft to the support teams, were perfectly synchronized, directly impacting the mission's ability to simulate landing procedures and safely return to Earth. Furthermore, Petrone's ability to manage and mitigate risks contributed to the mission's ability to pave the way for Apollo 11's successful moon landing just two months later. Through his leadership, Petrone not only influenced the outcome of Apollo 10 but also helped solidify the foundation for the historic achievements that would follow in the Apollo program.
