The highest award bestowed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
NASA Distinguished Service Medal with Original Signed,
Hand-Engrossed Certificate as Awarded to Dr. Rocco Petrone in 1973,
Directly from the Dr. Rocco Petrone Family Collection. A
gold-colored medal of 1.625" diameter overall with "NASA
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE" around, hanging from a blue striped ribbon
with pin on reverse. The name and detailed text of the original
presentation certificate is in a calligraphic hand and reads as
follows:"The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Awards to Rocco A. Petrone the NASA Distinguished Service Medal
"In recognition for his distinguished contributions to the success of the Apollo Program. His outstanding leadership and dedicated performance as the Apollo Program Director from September 1969 through February 1973 were essential elements in carrying to completion our unprecedented technological achievement of a successful series of six manned landings on the moon and for reaping a vast and unique scientific harvest in the exploration of the moon and space. His managerial skill, engineering excellence and untiring personal efforts were extraordinary factors in accomplishment of the Apollo lunar exploration program which opened for all mankind a new understanding of the earth, moon, and planetary space.
