Description
Apollo 15 Flown American Flag on a Crew-Signed Presentation in Matted Display Directly from the Dr. Rocco Petrone Family Collection, with Photographic Provenance. A 5.75" x 4" cloth U.S. flag with a foil label below that reads: "This Flag Carried Aboard Apollo 15 During The First Extended Scientific Exploration Of The Moon, July 26-August 7, 1971". Beneath that is an extremely rare, presumably unflown 4" "Silver XV" crew patch (with Emilio Pucci hallmark). At left is a strong, unfaded 9.875" x 7.375" color glossy photo of Jim Irwin saluting the American flag on the moon (NASA image AS15-88-11866) boldly signed beneath in black felt tip: "August 2, Apollo Year 3/ To Rocco Petrone with warmest personal regards from the crew of Apollo 15 and sincere appreciation for your guidance and leadership in the outstanding success of Apollo./ Dave Scott", "Al Worden", and "Jim Irwin". Many examples of this presentation have faded photos and signatures; this one is bright and dark. As expected, there is some tape bleedthrough on the corners of the flag but it does not detract from the overall appearance of this presentation that includes a sincere and well-deserved tribute to Petrone from Commander Scott. Included is a 7" x 5" color photo of Petrone holding this mat, standing with the crew. Very fine.Under Petrone's leadership, the Apollo 15 mission was designed to be a tour de force of lunar exploration, with a strong emphasis on scientific research and data collection. Petrone was instrumental in the development of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), a groundbreaking innovation that allowed the Apollo 15 astronauts to venture farther across the lunar surface than ever before. The LRV's mobility and payload capacity enabled the crew to conduct a comprehensive geological survey, collect extensive samples, and perform a wide range of experiments, significantly enhancing our understanding of the moon's composition and history.
