Description
Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Appointment for a Surgeon. Single vellum sheet, 15" x 19". City of Washington, February 6, 1862. Partly printed document appointing John H. Janeway to the post of Assistant Surgeon in the US Army Medical Staff. Janeway received three promotions during the war, the last one to Lt. Colonel by Brevet on March 13, 1865. He remained in the Army after the war, retiring from service in 1893.Condition. Stored folded, but vellum remains supple. Light soiling in a few areas and scattered toning. Both Lincoln and Stanton signatures are very bold. Lincoln's signature is completely unaffected by the fold beneath it. Pencil notations on verso.
