Description
General Gouverneur K. Warren and Staff Albumen by Photographer Mathew Brady. Measuring 10.25" x 9", Union General Warren and twelve members of his staff are seen outside of the headquarters of the 5th Army Corps during the first month of the Siege of Petersburg in June 1864. A pencil notation near the lower edge of the mount identifies the building as "Old Colonel Averys House near Petersburg." Warren stands fifth from left, directly in front of the 5th A.C. flag. Each member of Warren's staff is identified directly below their respective image. An additional notation near the upper edge of the Brady mount reads, "Reminisence [sic] of the Past." Mount shows moderate foxing with some foxing evident on the photograph itself. Mounting remnants on the verso.Following the rise of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to commanding general of the United States armies, the entire Army of the Potomac was restructured. In March 1864, command of the 5th A.C. was given to Gen. Warren (1830-1882), referred to as the "Hero of Little Round Top" due to his successful defense of that place during that Battle of Gettysburg one year earlier. Warren was criticized for being slow and overly cautious and, following the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865, Gen. Sheridan relieved Warren of command of 5th A.C. Warren resigned his commission in protest, but served another seventeen years in the Army Corps of Engineers. He tried the remainder of his life to have his reputation restored until a court of inquiry, called by President Rutherford B. Hayes, found that his relief by Sheridan had been unjustified. Sadly, the results of the finding were not published until shortly after his death.
