Description

Civil War Union Broadside: General Orders No. 31 Issued in the District of Eastern Virginia. Single oversized sheet, 11" x 15"; Norfolk, Virginia; September 22 and 24, 1864. Top of broadside is na order issued by Brigadier General George F. Shepley stating that "all persons within the District of Eastern Virginia over 16 years of age, who have not taken the Oath of Allegiance, will be sent outside the lines." The order will take effect on and after October 15, 1864 and that Colonel H.T. Sanders of the 19th Wisconsin is charged with making arrangements to issue said oaths.

The bottom portion of the broadside are Sanders' instructions and assignments of officers to carry out Shepley's orders. Signed in type: "H.T. Sanders, Col. and Provost Marshall."

Condition: Bits of paper loss have been expertly restored along the center, affecting a few words; most notably at bottom margin where a 0.5" x 1" area has been replaced. Three small tape stains at top. Faint stray stains to a few areas, but overall clean. The broadside is housed in Mylar (which can be removed), and sits in a hinged mat, which can be lifted for full inspection of the broadside.
