Description

Alexander Hamilton Signed Cover. Folded down to 5.5" x 3.25". Signed "Free / A Hamilton" as secretary of the treasury in the lower left corner. Addressed in an unknown hand to "Joseph Hiller Esq / Collector / Salem / Massachusetts." Stamped "Free" near the upper right corner with a circular "31/IV" Franklin mark in the upper left. Docketed on the verso. Remnant of a red wax seal also on the verso.

Joseph Hiller was appointed tax collector for the District of Salem and Beverly by President George Washington and served in that capacity from August 4, 1789, until his retirement on January 17, 1803.

Condition: Smoothed folds are toned causing some fading to the text.
