Description
William C. C. Claiborne Letter Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 8" x 13.5", New Orleans, December 26, 1808, as governor of the Territory of Orleans (Louisiana), to Captain Samuel B. Davis of New Orleans. The letter requests Davis' assistance in obtaining voluntary enlistments for the militia stating that it was not probable that they would be asked to go outside the territory. He hopes that enough patriotism would be displayed in order to avoid a draft.Claiborne (1772/1775-1817) was the last territorial governor and first state governor of Louisiana (admitted as a state in 1812). Previous to this he served in the United States House of Representatives for Tennessee (he replaced Andrew Jackson) and was superintendent of Indian Affairs in Mississippi Territory. During the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, he supervised the transfer into U.S. hands. Following his final term as governor, he served in the U.S. Senate until his death.
Davis (1776-1854) was born in Lewes, Delaware. He married abroad and served in the French Navy with the rank of captain. He returned to this country in the late 1790s and settled in New Orleans becoming prominent in public affairs. Claiborne appointed him Captain of the Port of New Orleans in 1805. He left New Orleans at the start of the War of 1812 and his leadership in the heroic defense of Lewes against the British bombardment earned him a commission as lieutenant colonel by President Madison. A later assignment would return him to New Orleans for its defense, arriving the day after Andrew Jackson's victory. He remained on active duty there until 1819.
Condition: Toning, a few areas of light foxing, one small repaired tear. Expertly silked.
