Description

Confederate Brigadier General John H. Kelly Autograph Endorsement Signed ("J. H. Kelly / Brig. Genl. Comdg.") with Carte de Visite. This Confederate partly-printed document ("Form No. 57 - Officers' Pay Account") measures 12" x 8.5". Kelly dates the endorsement February 14, 1864, and approves the payment of $468 to 1st Lt. E. H. McDaniel, the aide-de-camp of the 4th Cavalry Division. Kelly endorses in full, "Hd. Qtrs, 4th Cav. Div. / Near Oxford Ala / Feby. 24th 1864 / Approve. / [signed] J. H. Kelly / Brig Genl / Comdg." Smoothed folds, minor stains, and a few small ink smudges.

The CDV (2.5" x 4") features the youthful, though earnest, brigadier general wearing a forage cap. One corner of the CDV has a tiny clip while another has been damaged. Some staining and dark dotting. A tax stamp appears on the verso, along with annotations and former mounting remnants.

Kelly (1840-1864) was the youngest Confederate brigadier general at the time of his promotion during the Civil War and was one of the youngest generals to die in the war. He was shot by a Union soldier while leading a charge near Franklin, Tennessee, on August 20, 1864.
