Civil War Officers' Private Purchase Haversack Identified to Colonel Benjamin Franklin Davis, New York 8th Cavalry, Killed in Action at Beverly Ford, Virginia. The black leather bag measures 10" x 9.5", and is reinforced along the top edge with white metal trim. On the obverse side, written in white paint "Col. B. Davis/8th N.Y. Cav.". Benjamin Franklin Davis, an 1854 graduate of West Point, enlisted in San Francisco on August 6, 1861 and was commissioned a Lt. Colonel in the Field & Staff of the California 1st Cavalry. He resigned after three months and in July, 1862 he entered the Field & Staff of the New York 8th Cavalry as a Colonel. He served with distinction at many engagements including Chancellorsville, Harpers Ferry, and Brandy Station. He was killed on June 9, 1864 at Beverly Ford, Virginia. Records indicate he was shot in the forehead at point blank range by Lt. Owen Allen of the 6th Virginia Cavalry. Colonel Davis is buried in the cemetery at West Point. The haversack displays honest wear from use and is complete with carrying sling. A spectacular piece with association to a distinguished soldier.
