Description

Large Civil War Officers' Haversack. This substantial haversack measures about 13" tall by 14" wide. The detachable 1" wide black leather strap has a deep red leather backing and an ornate buckle that retains almost all its original gilt finish. The gently flared flap is edged with two rows of stitching and embossed with shell and leaf design, missing fastening strap and buckle. The body is made of glazed leather and divided inside into two sections constructed from tarred canvas. The large interior bag closes by means of a leather strap and roller buckle, both of which are present. Haversack exhibits a few minor rips and expected wear but overall in excellent condition. Found in the haversack is a brass stencil cut with name "A.C. Brown", and identified to Lieut. Col. Andrew C. Brown of the 13th Vermont Infantry.
