Description

Confederate General John C. Breckinridge Autograph Endorsement Signed with Rank. On the verso of a one page letter from Phil M. Victor, in command of Morehead's Partisan Rangers. Victor's letter is one page, 8.5" x 10.5" written from Camp Yalobusha near Grenada, Mississippi; July 2, 1862. Victor writes to Breckinridge requesting "arms and equipments" for his regiment. He adds, "Col Morehead was taken prisoner a short time since near Memphis, Tenn by [a] detachment of Federal Cavalry and has been sent northward for imprisonment. The Command of the Corps has devolved upon me... I appeal to you as a Ken[tuckian] to give us your assistance in this matter."

Breckenridge writes a lengthy endorsement on the verso: "Respectfully forwarded to Gen Van Dorn, with the expression of opinion that this will be an efficient... and the hope that the requisition may be filled. John C Breckinridge / Major Gen C S A."

Condition: Dampstaining throughout affecting text. Heavy vermin damage at all margins resulting in some loss of text, though Breckinridge's endorsement and signature remain unaffected. Flattened folds and creasing.
