[Civil War-Reconstruction]. Adelbert C. Ames Autographed Postal Cover Signed, "A. Ames." Postal cover, 6.75" x 3.5", [Washington, DC]; circa 1872. On upper left-hand corner of cover is printed "Message of the President of the United States, 3d Session-42 Congress, 1872." The cover is addressed to Mrs. Joseph [Vlinman?], North Cornville, Maine.

Adelbert C. Ames (1835-1933) was an American sailor, soldier, and politician who served with distinction as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. A Radical Republican, he served as a military governor, U.S. Senator from Mississippi (1870-1874), and civilian governor in Reconstruction-era Mississippi (1868-1870; 1874-1876). In 1898, Ames served as a U.S. Army general during the Spanish-American War.

Condition: The postal cover has a tear through "Ames" in upper right-hand corner, is rough around edges; otherwise good.
