Union Major General Charles Ferguson Smith Carte de Visite and Telegram Signed by Major General Henry Wager Halleck Regarding the Transfer of Smith's Body to St. Louis. A fantastic lot including: (1) CDV of General Smith posed standing, in uniform, measuring approximately 2.5" x 4" with an E. Anthony, New York imprint on the verso. From a negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. A sharp, bright image in fine condition. (2) One-page telegram, 5.5" x 8.5", partially printed, the remainder completed in manuscript, [Pittsburgh Landing], [April] 26, 1862, to "Dr. Hewitt". The telegram reads in full: "Gen Smiths remains will be transferred to St. Louis placed in a metallic & buried there with military honors and left subject to order of his family you will make all necessary arrangements for the personal accompany the remains to St. Louis and there report in person to the Adjt Genl in Washington a steamer will be sent from here today H. W. Halleck Maj Genl". With old fold creases, else legible, bright and in fine condition. Major General Charles Ferguson Smith (1807-1862) was an 1825 graduation of the West Point Military Academy and saw extensive service in the Mexican-American War. His promising career was cut short when he died as a result of an infection and dysentery early in the war. He was ultimately buried Laurel Hill cemetery in Philadelphia.Auction Info
