Description

1808 Campaign "Dirty Politics": "Republicans be on your guard!" This 14" x 10" broadside on rag paper supports the election of Peter Porter to Congress and William Rumsey to the New York Assembly. It reports on the Republican [i.e., Jeffersonian Democrat] town meeting that nominated them and on Federalist efforts to fool Republican electors into casting two votes for the assembly, thereby invalidating their ballots, as only one candidate per county was being voted on. Porter received a Congressional Gold Medal for heroism in the War of 1812, served several terms in Congress and was Secretary of War under John Quincy Adams. This evocative piece of political ephemera was issued near the end of April 1808.
