Description
George Gershwin Signed Copy of George Gershwin's Song-Book. New York: Random House, 1932. Large quarto, 9.75" x 13". First edition. Number 107 of 300. Publisher's full blue Morocco with gilt titles. A collection of Gershwin's notable songs with illustrations by Constantin Alajalov and an introduction written by Gershwin. Signed, "George Gershwin" and "Alajalov" on the limitation page bound in the rear.This volume presents a collection of Gershwin's most notable songs as organized by himself and transcribed for solo piano play. In his introduction, the composer acknowledges, "In a country that spends so much money on its dance music it was inevitable that there should be a radical development in the playing of its most important instrument - the piano." Gershwin admitted that he hoped the publication would act as a means of extending the lives of the songs selected.
The child of Russian immigrants, Gershwin grew up in New York City playing music with his famous brother, Ira. Although much of his work appeared on Broadway and in movie soundtracks, he considered himself a serious composer and studied with classical greats such as Henry Cowell and Wallingford Riegger.
Condition: Upper and lower boards rubbed along bottom and spine is sunned. Joints cracked and bumped corners. Margins toned with some pages detached from binding. Stain along top margin of half-title. Pages 95 - 98 are unbound but present.
