Description

[Slavery.] 1861 Slave Promissory Note. One page, 7.75" x 7", [Bradley County, Alabama]; January 1, 1861. A handwritten promissory note agreeing to pay $225 to a Mr. Green, "for the hire of a negro boy, which boy I take with the usual conditions of hiring annexed". Signed by the two borrowers, W.H. Waters and James T. Whiteside. Whiteside was a prominent landowner in Arkansas.

Condition: Flattened folds, with a few small holes at the folds where paper has weakened. Light toning and soiling throughout.
