Description

Howard Hughes and Jean Peters Handwritten Notes Signed "Howard" and "J." Two pages, 7.25" x 9" (sight), no place; no date. Written on yellow legal pad, a correspondence between Howard and Jean making plans to meet. Howard starts the letter writing: "Dearest Sweetheart, Whom I love & adore, how would you like to visit me earlier tonight? Like about Saint time at 11:15? If this is OK, I will be all set & ready. I love you very very much, Howard."

Beneath his note, Jean has answered in pencil: "Dearest - That will be fine - I'll wait for your message - or come in at 11:15 - without. Love J."

On verso, Howard writes again, in what seems to be a random stream of consciousness or notes: "They are still postponing Saint. That SOB cost this country a tremendous loss of prestige. He ought to be shot. She is so F____ artificial. I am going to work all night & most of it our projects. Is that a part of his swallowing and digesting process? I just said I know you didn't enjoy it. I gonna fly straight. A Giant pitcher hit a Dodger catcher on head with bat in game today & I want to hear how he was. If you wake up later let me know. I love you. Hyperbolicly." The letter is matted and framed in a custom frame so that both sides may be visible, measuring 29.5" x 29.75" overall.

Movie actress Jean Peters and billionaire Howard Hughes were married in Nevada in 1957 but maintained separate bedrooms and lives for the majority of their 14-year marriage. Their chief method of communication was handwritten notes. The baseball injury mentioned refers to an incident in a game on August 22, 1965 where San Francisco Giant pitcher Juan Marachal hit Los Angeles Dodger catcher John Roseboro on the head with his bat, causing a 14-minute brawl.

Condition: Flattened folds, with tearing and paper loss along the lower left edge; does not appear to affect any of the text.
