Description
James W. Marshall of Sutter's Mill Signature Card. This 2 ¾" x 5.25" index card is signed "Ja's W. Marshall" who is credited, as the card indicates, as "The Discoverer of Gold in California January 19th, 1848." The card depicts the site of his discovery, Old Sutter Mill, near Coloma. Marshall, born in Lambertville, New Jersey, farmed in Missouri before migrating to California where he engaged in cattle ranching. Upon his return from service in the Mexican War, his cattle had gone missing and his homestead fallen in disrepair, prompting him to work for Captain Sutter, building a saw mill and supervising a lumber operation. Despite his achievement, Marshall failed to capitalize on it and died in relative obscurity and poverty. His post-discovery careers included farming, operating a vineyard and appearing on the lecture circuit.Auction Info
