Description

William H. Vanderbilt Autograph Letter Signed "WH Vanderbilt". One page on New York Central & Hudson River Railroad Co. letterhead, 5.25" x 8.25", New York, April 29, 1880. He writes: "I hope the match will be made. Stone will I think take care of himself, as you say a match well made is half won. He has a [illegible] & will give a good account of himself. Please send the Spirit to my address Mrs. Vanderbilt care Drexel Hayes & to Paris. It will be of great import over there. Good luck to you. Goodbye."

Vanderbilt was a prolific American businessman, and became the richest man in America after his father's death in 1877. He then took over as president of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad Company and later used his vast fortune for philanthropic work.

Condition: Lightly toned throughout, usual mail folds. Paper clip stain at top margin. Mounting remnants on verso.
