Description
Anna, Empress of Russia Document Signed. One page, 8 1/8 x 12 1/4 inches; [Court at St. Petersburg]; April 19, 1733. A formal decree written in Cyrillic. In part [English translation]: "In the past year 1732, on September the 15th day, according to the given decree, our military regiment was ordered to send from among the people instructions, so that from now on they should act according to the military regulations issued, to perform partisan works, and to conduct engineering works properly and with due responsibility. Our diplomatic service, having examined this matter, judged it necessary, by our decree, to order the regiments: to act so that the people should be properly trained, to carry out partisan works correctly, and to ensure that no harm is caused thereby. The commanders and officers are ordered to keep strict watch over the fulfillment of these decrees." Signed, "Anna" at conclusion.The decree was part of Empress Anna Ioannovna's broader effort to stabilize and strengthen the Russian Empire through disciplined military administration following the upheavals of the post-Petrine era. During her reign, she sought to preserve and institutionalize the reforms initiated under Peter the Great, particularly by reinforcing centralized authority and professional standards within the armed forces.
Condition: Toned with flattened folds, minor creasing, and minor cockling at lower margin. Minor loss and wear along entire left edge, fully reinforced on verso. Additional reinforcement to lower margin on verso. Loss at lower right margin now filled in. Scattered staining and soiling. Small tear at bottom center. Pencil notations at upper margin, and red ink transfer at lower margin. Additional pencil notations at lower left margin of verso.
