Description

Napoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed. One page, 7 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches (sight); no place; April 8, 1813. A letter in French to his adopted son Eugene de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, written a month after the catastrophic retreat from Russia. In full [English translation]: "General Bourcier informed me on the date of April 2 that it was necessary to bring together all two Lithuanian regiments into a single one, appointing to it a good quartermaster. Take charge of this and have it carried out promptly." Signed, "Nap." Matted and framed to an overall size of 11 7/8 x 25 1/2 inches.

Eugene de Beauharnais was one of the few commanders who retained Napoleon's confidence after 1812. He had proven himself indispensable in maintaining French authority in Italy and along the eastern approaches to Europe.
