[Abraham Lincoln]. Robert Smith Todd, Father of Mary Todd Lincoln, Autograph Letter Signed. One page on a bifolium, 8" x 9.75". Lexington, Kentucky, May 19, 1849, to P.S. Bush, Covington, Kentucky.

Robert Smith Todd (1791-1849) was at various times a soldier, banker, lawyer, business man and politician. He fought in the American Revolution; his family was instrumental in founding Lexington and he served in various political offices in the state. He was also a business man and it is in this capacity that he writes this letter concerning dividends on his shares in the Covington and Lexington Turnpike. Todd still held 10 shares of stock and writes to Bush, in part: "I still the stock and the agency to sell & get the dividends - there are 3 or 4 years dividends due, if any have been declared - will you arrange if so as to draw this balance - please enquire and state to me the value of this stock, and the prospects for the future and what I can sell it for..."

Condition: Old smoothed fold creases and creases along the edges, top right corner lacking affecting the last two numbers of the date, "1819" written in black ink at the top right and bottom left corner, otherwise bright and legible. Very good condition.
