Description

[Emancipation Proclamation]. The New York Herald. New York; Tuesday, September 23, 1862. No. 9506. Eight pages, 15.75" x 22". Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 stating that if the rebelling states did not cease fighting and rejoin the Union by January 1, 1863, the slaves in those states would be set free. The New York Herald issued this front-page early printing of Lincoln's Proclamation the very next day appearing under the headline: "All Slaves in States of Rebellion January 1, 1863, to Be Free."

Condition: Very gently toned. Previously bound, with traces of adhesive residue along the left margin. Bits of paper loss along left edge well away from text. Pencil notation at top right corner above masthead.
