Gideon Welles' pass to Lincoln's funeral at the Executive Mansion

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination]. Scarce Pass to Abraham Lincoln's Funeral at the Executive Mansion. 5" x 3.25" printed on thick paper stock with black mourning border. It reads, "EAST. Admit the Bearer to the Executive Mansion, on Wednesday, the 19th of April, 1865." Passes to Lincoln's funeral services at the Executive Mansion were issued in small numbers as attendees were limited to officials and dignitaries. It is said that less than 600 of these passes were printed allowing entrance into the Executive Mansion from various entry points. This particular pass was issued to Gideon Welles, who served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy. A printed letter from Swann Galleries stating that the pass, which was sold at their auction on September 29, 2022, was consigned from the collection of Thomas Welles Brainard, great-great-grandson of Gideon Welles, is included.

Condition: Light offsetting and trace adhesive stains along the right margin on the verso. A few stray spots of foxing on the recto.
