Description

William Franklin Signed Marriage License. One partially printed page, 12 ½ x 7 ¾ inches (sight), Burlington, New Jersey; October 10, 1770. A marriage license for William Pettit and Sarah Burdsall, signed "Wm. Franklin." Framed to an overall size of 18 x 13 ¼ inches.

William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's illegitimate son, was a prominent loyalist and the last colonial Governor of New Jersey. His unwavering support for the British during the American Revolutionary War contrasted sharply with his father's revolutionary stance, leading to their estrangement. Before the end of the American Revolution, Franklin went into exile in Britain where he stayed until his death in 1813.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Heavy wear along folds resulting in partial separation and bits of loss. With toning and foxing. Heavy chipping around frame.
