Stephen Douglas Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7 ¼ x 12 ¼ (sight), [Illinois]; October 23, 1841. A ruling to a motion in the case of "Jonathan Billing vs George Waught" in which Stephen Douglas presided as the judge. Signed, "S. A. Douglas." Framed with an engraving of Douglas to an overall size of 22 x 18 inches.

Stephen Douglas served as a judge on the Fifth Judicial Circuit in Illinois starting in 1841, when he was just 27 years old. His tenure on the circuit was a pivotal moment in his early career, allowing him to travel widely and build a broad political network across the state. During his time on the Illinois Supreme Court Justice, Douglas presided over twenty-four cases where Abraham Lincoln represented clients.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Visible flattened folds and toning. Stray stains and offsetting. Separation along bottom fold. Frame has some wear.
