Description

Winston Churchill Typed Letter Signed "Yours ever, W." Two pages, 6.5" x 8.25" (sight), Westerham, Kent; October 4, 1959. Addressed to Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook, the letter reads in full:

"It was so kind of you to suggest that I should come to the Capponcina when you are there. If opportunity offers, I would certainly much like to pay you a visit and to add to the many happy days I have spent there in your company. I have looked again at the reproductions of your pictures in TIME Magazine. They are very fine and you are much to be congratulated on making this remarkable display available in Canada. It covers a great range, and will give pleasure for many years to come. I have now drunk the excellent bottle of 1928 champagne which you so kindly brought for me. I enjoyed it much and it does not seem to have lost any of its sparkle, in spite of its great age. Thank you so much for it, and also for your splendid gift of the 1934 and 1947 vintages, which I look forward to drinking." Matted and framed with a black and white photograph of Churchill to the overall size of 26" x 14.5".

Aitken worked as a Canadian-British newspaper publisher, most influentially with the Daily Express. He became good friends with Churchill and later served as his Minister of Aircraft Production from 1940-1941, Minister of Supply from 1941-1942, and Minister of War Production for just two weeks in February 1942. He then was made Lord Privy Seal, a position which he held from 1943 until the end of the Second World War.

Condition: Flattened mail folds with minor edge toning. There is a small spot of soiling on the second typed page.
