Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." Two pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.25" (sight), Washington, D.C.; February 15, 1866. Addressed to Hon. Henry Wilson of the U.S. Senate. Reads in full: "I have the honor of enclosing to you some papers referred to me on the subject of legislation in behalf of 'Military Storekeepers' of the Army. I have not been able to give the subject sufficient consideration to make any specific recommendation. The fact is however that some of the officers filling the position of Military Storekeepers have performed duties, particularly during the War, of great magnitude and pecuniary responsibility, upon a salary less than is received by many Clerks who have no responsibility. I believe something should be done for them."

The letter is matted and framed in a custom-hinged frame, where both sides are able to be viewed, measuring 21.75" x 16.25". This frame is mounted on a larger frame, along with a black and white image of Grant and an informational plaque, measuring 41" x 24.5". During Reconstruction, Grant strongly believed that it was the responsibility of the United States government to support the veterans who had fought in the Union Army.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with uneven toning throughout.
