Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Appointment. One partially printed page on vellum, 19" x 15.12" (sight), Washington, [D.C.]; February 23, 1865. Appointment of Almon H. Rockwell as Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Major in the Union Army. Signed, "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Matted and framed with photographs of Lincoln and Edwin Stanton as well as two informational plaques to the overall size of 34.5" x 37.5".

Lincoln appointed Rockwell to this position less than two months before the end of the Civil War and his untimely death at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. February 1865 marked an important month in the war effort. While General William Sherman continued his march from Georgia to South Carolina, reestablishing Union control, Confederate President Jefferson Davis agreed to send delegates to a peace conference with President Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward. However, the talks fell through when Davis requested that Lincoln acknowledge the Confederacy's independence before the meeting.

Condition: Not examined outside of frame. Document has creasing throughout and top margin rolled. Seal intact. Some fading throughout, though Lincoln's signature remains quite legible. Minor scuffs to frame.
