Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4.25" x 5.75", no place; April 9, no year. Addressed to Mrs. Welles on mourning stationery. It reads in full: "Allow me to thank you, for the books, which in our time of deep distress, have been found very suitable companions. Be kind enough to accept this simple bouquet from yours." Signed, "Mary Lincoln." Mrs. Mary Welles was the wife of Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles. It is presumed this letter was sent after the death of the Lincolns' son, Willie, in February of 1862. It is tipped into a sheet to an overall size of 5" x 7".
