Description
Highly Graphic Fort Henry Letter. 3-page letter written on large bifolium stationery, Fort Henry, Tennessee, February 9, 1862, from G. W. Dunham to his sister. In part: "...We left Cairo on the 2 day of Febuary about 40000 men... went up the tenasee river and landed within 6 miles of fort henry... on the 7 day of febuary our army started of in a solid body for the fight but we were sadly disapointed for our gunboats came crawling up the river... the firing continued for about 1 hour and five minutes when their firing ceased. the rebels had all left... We never fired a gun. we captured about 100 prisoners and amongst the rest we took general Tillman and several cornels and lieutants... General Tillman stood in the fort at the time of the firing of the gunboats when he seen that they ware agoing to get whiped. he wanted to run but 2 of his men drew their guns on him and told him if he run one step they would blow his branes out. he then came back to the flag and pulled it down... there was only about 10 of the rebels killed. one of their guns busted and killed 5 men. they looked horrible. one of the men had both of his arms and head blown off . one with his innards all out. one with his skull blown off and his branes scattered all over... our cavalry pursued them for about 8 miles. they threw down their guns knapsacks... they had it worse than bulls run... they have another fort on the cumberland river about 8 miles from where we are... we will make an attack on that place [Fort Donelson] in a day and if that place is easily taken I think the war will soon be over." Scattered stains and minor loss, as shown. A great letter describing the first significant Union victory in what would turn out to be a long and bloody conflict.Auction Info
