Description
Napoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed. One page, 7 ¼ x 9 inches; Witespk; July 29, 1812. An interesting letter written just before Napoleon's first major victory during the Russian Campaign, in French to Henri-Jacques Clarke, Duc de Feltre, concerning a medical crisis within the cavalry of the Army of Spain. Signed 'Np', with contemporary note pinned at lower left corner.Napoleon's most ambitious campaign started promisingly on June 24, 1812, but the Grand Armee was almost immediately beset by shortages of provisions and rampant illness amongst the troops. During this anxious time, Napoleon urgently writes to his Secretary and most trusted advisor expressing deep concern about an illness spreading through the cavalry. Despite the setbacks, which cost the General nearly half his men, Napoleon emerged victorious in the August 18, 1812 Battle of Smolensk, only to retreat to France, defeated, some four months later.
Condition: Transmittal folds, otherwise boldly signed and very good.
