Description
A Magnificent Sterling Silver Piece with Slavery Subject Matter. A massive lidded vessel weighing several pounds, made in France in the mid-19th century (see our website for close-ups of the hallmark). A crouching Negro slave forms the finial on the lid, while the central band has very detailed, deep-relief scenes of a sugar cane plantation, presumably in Haiti. Slaves are shown performing various aspects of cutting and handling the cane, and one is being instructed by a European master who carries what appears to be a folded whip. The piece is in beautiful condition, with great display presence. An important relic of the pre-Civil War period. Height 7.5", diameter 7.75".
