Description
Thomas Jefferson Signed Land Grant. One partially printed page, 15.37" x 9", Washington, [D.C.]; December 22, 1808. Signed by Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States, this land grant awards Philip Hettsell one-quarter of a lot in Ohio north of then-capital Chillicothe. Between 1798 and 1821, Congress authorized the sale of any remaining public lands in the state to private owners in an effort to populate the area. Known as "Congress Lands," these territories were divided into carefully surveyed grids and allotted to individual applicants. As one of the first settled territories in the Midwest, Ohio functioned as an important political and economic asset to the rapidly growing United States. Docketed on verso with archival notations. Boldly signed "Th: Jefferson" and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison.Condition: Creased along folds. Light staining and foxing throughout, more so at folds. Staining on verso affecting docket. Pencil notation on verso.
