Description
Thomas Jefferson Four Languages Ship's Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as President. One oversized partially printed sheet, 22.5" x 17", Baltimore; May 15, 1805. Printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, this passport authorizes the passage of "Daniel Fitch master or commander of the Schooner called the Prosperity of the burthen of 45 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Baltimore bound for Jamaican and laden with Flour, Codfish, Candels [sic] & dry goods..."Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. Paper seal of the United States affixed at the left. The document is matted and framed to the overall size of 30" x 24".
Condition: Dark and uneven toning, including a band affecting Jefferson's signature. Chipping and tears at the folds and at margins, with evidence of reinforcement visible along top horizontal fold, along which there is paper loss. Tear and paper loss at center vertical fold affects printed name "Jefferson" and a few lines of text directly beneath. Large chip of paper loss at left not affecting any text. Small tear with paper loss at tope left corner.
