Description

John Adams Autograph Document Signed, Also Signed by Robert Treat Paine. One page, 7" x 12", Massachusetts; October 26, 1769. Legal document acknowledging that Edward Bacon of Barnstable, Massachusetts owes one thousand pounds. The document reads, in part, "The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a controversy suffering between Joseph Doane, Joseph Doane Jun.r Stephen Sians and Thomas Jones, on the one part and Lat Gage on the other part, respecting the property of a whale that was killed in the Streight [sic] of Bellisle A.D. 1765." Signed, "John Adams" and "R.T. Paine."

Before John Adams became a pivotal member of the American Revolution and a fixture of the new nation's government, he had a successful colonial legal career. Adams earned a law degree from Harvard in 1758 and began practicing the next year. As tensions grew between the British monarchy and the colonies, Adams focused on protecting colonists from royal charges. Only a year before Adams signed this document, he represented John Hancock and successfully defended the future revolutionary against charges of violating British trade acts.

Condition: Creased along folds with minor paper loss at all four margins. Minor staining. Archival tape and pencil notations to verso. Pencil notation to top left recto with seal remnants to bottom right. Two tears at the bottom margin affecting the signatures of Paine and Bacon.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
