Description
Abraham Lincoln and William Seward Autograph Endorsement Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8", New York; May 22, 1861. In a letter addressed to William Seward, Mrs. Edward Morgan makes an appeal for the promotion of her friend, Lieutenant Chauncey McKeever. She notes that many less experienced individuals have gotten promoted over McKeever, and asks Seward to consider promoting him or at the very least meeting with him.On page 4, Seward has written the following endorsement: "Especially recommended to the Secretary of War for deserved promotion. Will H Seward." President Abraham Lincoln has added his own endorsement below this, writing simply: "I concur. A. Lincoln May 25, 1861." The letter has been displayed in a glass frame, so that both sides are visible, to the overall size of 12.5" x 10.5".
Chauncey McKeever (1829-1901) had graduated from West Point in 1849. Mrs. Morgan's letter on his behalf appears to have been successful, because he was promoted to Captain under Major General John C. Fremont in August 1861. He was again promoted the following year to Lieutenant Colonel and placed on the staff of Major General Samuel Heintzelman. He fought bravely and faithfully in service of the Union army, and by the end of the war he was brevetted Brigadier General.
Condition: Flattened mail folds, with a few small separations at the folds. Light soiling and ink spotting. Boldly signed.
