Commissioned by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to present to visitors to the Executive Mansion, The White House: An Historic Guide was an immediate success. Founded in 1961 as a part of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy's program for restoring and teaching about the White House, the guide was the first publication of the association with Mrs. Kennedy actively participating in the editing. Mrs. Kennedy was deeply committed to restoring the White House to its proper place amongst historic residences. The pictures and comprehensive descriptive text within the book attest to her success in this endeavor.
