Description

Presentation Copy of The White House: An Historic Guide, Inscribed and Signed by John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy. Washington, D.C.: White House Historical Association, 1962. Second Edition. Small 4to. Limited edition of seventy-five copies of which this is number 26a. Inscribed and signed by John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy on the limitation page, "To Ralph Dungan with warm personal regards John Kennedy Jacqueline Kennedy Christmas 1962." The inscription and date are in the President's hand. Bound in full red leather, boards ruled in gilt, spine stamped in gilt, Dungan's initials "RAD" in gilt at the lower right corner of the front board, marbled endpapers.

Dungan served in numerous capacities for John F. Kennedy. In 1956, Dungan joined then-Senator Kennedy as a legislative aid before signing on to Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign. Upon ascending to the presidency, Kennedy named Dungan Special Assistant to the President in 1961 to reward him for his loyalty. While in this position, Dungan focused on African and Latin American affairs, becoming a specialist on the latter. Following Kennedy's assassination, Dungan stayed on to advise President Johnson on Latin America and was later appointed U.S. Ambassador to Chile.

Commissioned by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to present to visitors to the Executive Mansion, The White House: An Historic Guide was an immediate success. Founded in 1961 as a part of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy's program for restoring and teaching about the White House, the guide was the first publication of the association with Mrs. Kennedy actively participating in the editing. Mrs. Kennedy was deeply committed to restoring the White House to its proper place amongst historic residences. The pictures and comprehensive descriptive text within the book attest to her success in this endeavor.

Condition: Some rubbing to the spine, boards, and corners. Otherwise fine.
