Description

Abraham Lincoln Carte de Visite. 2 ½ x 4 inches. Taken by Alexander Gardner on February 24, 1861 in Matthew Brady's Studio, shortly after Lincoln's arrival in Washington ahead of his inauguration. It was his first portrait sitting in Washington and the first studio image in which he wears a full beard. The image is listed as O-51B in Lloyd Ostendorf's book Lincoln's Photographs: A Complete Album. Stamped on the reverse, "Published by E. & H. T. Anthony . . . from Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery."

Condition: Light toning, with good detail to the albumen. Pencil annotation and light soiling on verso.
