Description
Cassius Clay and Thomas Nast Autograph Manuscripts Signed Prepared for Inclusion in The Lincoln Memorial: Album-Immortelles. Each manuscript is a page in length and written on identical stationery (5 ½ x 8 ¼ inches) featuring a profile of Lincoln at top and an engraving of a proposed Lincoln Memorial on the verso. In 1882 the great Lincoln historian, Osborn H. Oldroyd, published a book entitled, The Lincoln Memorial: Album Immortelles. Original Life Pictures with Autographs from the Hands and Hearts of Eminent American Contemporaries of the Great Martyr to Liberty, Abraham Lincoln. Oldroyd had solicited several hundred passages and remembrances about Abraham Lincoln from noted people of all walks of life. Offered here are the manuscripts prepared by artist Thomas Nast and statesman and abolitionist Cassius M. Clay.
Dated May 24, 1880, Clay writes his sentiments in the form of a letter. "A. Lincoln was the truest friend I ever had and therefore my estimate of his character must ne taken 'cum grano salis.' He was the most conscientious man I ever knew, and ranks with Washington in genius, public service, and patriotism. They will go down to posterity in equal love, admiration, and gratitude. After this I need not say that he was the man of his times: and such is the verdict of his contemporaries: a few like Seward & Adams, who hated him for 'standing in their light!'" Signed, "C.M. Clay." Oldroyd did not include Clay's comment regarding Seward and Adams in the published book.
Thomas Nast's passage is dated June 28, 1880 and reads: "I am not good at expressing myself in writing, and the sentiments I had for Lincoln were published at the time of his administration and death pictorially in Harper's Weekly. Th: Nast. Morristown, N.J." Nast's contribution was not included in Oldroyd's book.
The manuscripts are offered with a copy of The Lincoln Memorial: Album Immortelles, Chicago: Gem Publishing Company, 1883. With stamp of collector Harry G. Golden on the front pastedown and a traced annotation made by Argus E. Ogborn who records how he received the books from Golden and adds his mailing labels.
Condition: Both manuscripts have flattened folds and toning. The Clay manuscript has a dampening spot at top and two small tape remnants on verso. Nast manuscript has tape remnants on verso and small separation at right margin along the top horizontal fold. Binding is pulling away from text block. Tears to cloth at spine, with soiling and bumped corners.
