Description

George Washington Three Languages Ship's Passport Signed. One partially printed page, 12 ½ x 15 ¼ inches (sight), Philadelphia; November 11, 1794. A ship's passport issued to "Ganel Byrnes master or commander of the ship called the Maria of the burthen of 141 ton or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of Philadel[elphi]a bound for the West Indies and laden with provisions." Signed, "G:Washington." Also signed by Edmund Randolph as Secretary of State and the Deputy Collector of Customs. Matted and framed with a portrait of Washington and two informational plaques to the overall size of 32 ¼ x 30 ¾ inches.

Washington issued this passport amidst trade negotiations between the United States and Britain. Tensions remained high between the new nation and its former monarchy throughout the 1790s. English ships often harassed American sailors, seizing the men and their supplies as they traveled throughout the Atlantic and the Caribbean. In 1793, Washington sent Chief Justice John Jay, who was notoriously pro-British, to negotiate a deal. A week later, on December 19, the United States and Great Britain signed the immensely unpopular John Jay's Treaty, which allowed American vessels restricted access to the British West Indies. The ship here likely went to the West Indies to sell provisions to British plantations to feed, clothe, and house the thousands of slaves on the islands.

Condition: Creased along folds and lightly toned. Some minor staining, slightly affecting Randolph's signature. Two small holes, affecting Dutch and English text; and small chip at top left corner. Not examined outside of the frame.
