Description
[Abraham Lincoln Assassination]. Portion of Flag that Covered Lincoln's Body. 1/2 x 1/2 inch segment of red wool from the flag that covered Lincoln's body after he was shot and carried from Ford's Theatre and across the street to the Petersen House, where he passed the next morning. The segment is housed in a plastic sleeve and adhered to a copy of a Lincoln mourning ribbon and note of provenance.On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln and his wife were attending a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. when actor John Wilkes Booth entered their box and shot the 16th President of the United States from behind. Doctors immediately arrived and examined Lincoln while he was still in the viewing box, and made the decision to carry him across the street to a boarding house for further examination and care. They placed a flag over his body to hide him from bystanders, and upon arrival to the Petersen House, Lincoln was carried to a back bedroom and laid in a bed. Throughout the night while doctors tried to save his life and soldiers stood guard, over ninety closest friends, both political and personal, came and paid their respects. The next morning, Lincoln would pass in that back bedroom approximately nine hours after being shot.
Condition: Fraying and pulled lines of wool to bottom edge. Light toning to paper, with small scattered stains and pencil notation at top right corner.
